North-East, day at the beach

The funicular took me down to the beach
to the back of the pier and the slot machines.
Beside the fish-and-chip-smells
and their slow-moving queues.
The sun was shining – for now,
for the next few minutes at least;
we had to rush to get down to the sand before it left
which, inevitably,
it did.
