Her childhood photograph, 1986

Smiling
you greet the camera,
a loaf of home-baked bread
in your hands.
Amidst a retro-kitchen landscape
on a faded print
in your parents’ front room.
You’re standing up straight,
head tilted back as you grin.
The smile,
distilled,
I’d recognize at once as yours;
Unmistakable to me –
I am in love.
I’d have loved you then too, but
I was just a kid
a ten minute drive
and a childhood away.
